Have you ever found a book that reshaped your life? That’s what the Kricket Series by Amy A. Bartol did for me in 2016. It was a trilogy that didn’t have a happy ending, and I’m still hoping and praying for a 4th book. I stalk Amy’s website and Facebook pages every few months to see if there is any update on Kricket. There hasn’t been since 2017, stating there’s no plan for this series to continue. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 5/5 hearts.
I’ve thought about rereading this trilogy, but I’m not sure if my heart can be pulled out and stomped on that hard again. In the first Book, Kricket the MC is on her own, and hiding from Social Services. She always knew there was something unusual about herself. Kricket ends up getting kidnapped, and taken to a different dimension. This was just the start of this crazy, action packed series. There’s a love triangle, a war starts because of Kricket, and all she’s trying to do is survive.
Kricket’s character development and growth was set at a good pace. She had to make so many hard choices that I was not prepared for. We learn everything alongside her, so it was easy to share the same emotions that she was going through. The romance was an extremely slow burn, but their relationship wasn’t always pleasant. I wasn’t sure if I was rooting for their relationship, or if I wanted to put a stop to it.
The first thing that pulled me into this trilogy is the cover art, and after reading the blurb, I knew I had to read it. The book is a sci-fi with a dystopian feel to it. I’m usually not for those types of books, but this one had me hooked from the first chapter. The plot was original, and had so many unforgettable characters. I know a lot of people didn’t care for the made up language in this book, but it wouldn’t be the same world without it. It could be confusing, and sometimes I didn’t remember some of the definitions of the words, but it made it more realistic. Amy A. Bartol knows how to write a captivating story. She gets under your skin, and becomes addictive. I lose sleep over every story she writes. This book was no different.
I will say, even though it is a YA series, there is a lot of action and violence that happens almost immediately. It does have some adult themes of abuse and questionable consent. Don’t expect to have all your questions answered by the 3rd book either. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good action packed sci-fi romance.
